Least tern (Sternula antillarum) guarding an egg in a nest. The gravel has been place on the roof of the Department of Environmental Protection building in Marathon, Florida, USA. This tern was formally known as Sterna antillarum. It breeds in North and northern South America and is occasionally seen in Europe. The least tern is 22-24 centimetres long with a wingspan of around 50 centimetres. The nesting season is from early April to late July.
