The US Essex Class carrier USS Franklin at sea in 1944. The ship was badly damaged by two bombs on 19 March strike caught fully fuelled and armed planes on deck and started very dangerous fires. Though heavily damaged the ship did not sink and returned to the USA for repair. The ship was decommissioned in 1947 and scrapped in 1966.
