Built in Italianate Renaissance style, the Town Hall is set into the northern side of the market square so as not to compete with, or spoil the view from the Zamoyski Palace to the west. It was commenced in the 1580s, but its external curving stair was not added until 1768. The town was the brain child of Zamoyski (1542-1605), who was Grand Hetman and Chancellor of Poland, and decided to create a Renaissance city, cultural and trading centre in a fortress in the Lublin Upland. He commissioned the Italian architect from Padua, Bernardo Morando, to design the project, which commenced in 1580. During the Second World War the Nazis occupied the town and renamed it Himmlerstad.
