Retinal vascular occlusions, illustration. The retina, the light-sensitive layer lining the inside of the back of the eye, is responsible for detecting light entering the eye. It is supplied by a network of capillaries, both arterial (red) and venous (blue). The main blood vessels are the central retinal vein and the central retinal artery. Occlusion (blockage) of these blood vessels can cause severe damage to the retina (in the form of ischaemia and oedema) and ultimately can cause blindness.
