Fourth—Pick up the narrow section, swing itaround and place it with one end on the car betweenthe wide section, and the other end on ground, endsresting against a tie to prevent slippage. Fifth—Now crib up under the rails with ties togive proper support to the machine when it passesover. Sixth—Run a line from the pull-back drum to endof car opposite the end from which machine is to de-scend, having this line pass over end of car and fastento rail on surface track. This line will keep machinefrom descending too fast, and will also hold car fromrising or moving on track. The machine nowtravels down to the surface on its own power, the boom Building a Railroad. extended to back of car,or in opposite directionfrom wliich machine isleaving the car. Seethat foot brake on pull-back drum is sufficientlytight to hold machinefrom descending toorapidly. Seventh—By spacingthe rail section on the cribbing so that the lower endsof rails are equally distant from the surface track, the machine will run down onto the surface track onthe auxiliary, standard gauge truck wheels. Beforestarting off the car, be sure car wheels are blockedboth ways to keep car from moving. Ditcher Traveling On Its Own Track General Remarks The American travels under its own power onthe surface track in either direction.
