But so rapid has been womansdevelopment in this direction that to-day womens clubs form a chain fromocean to ocean, binding them as one great whole. The effect upon the mem-bers is magical; nature is enlarged; charity broadened; capacity for judg-ment increased; and hitherto unsuspected faculties are called into life andpower. The first organized demand by women for political recognition in bheUnited States was made in 1848, at what was known as the Seneca FallsConvention. Ridiculed, persecuted, kicked like a football from one genera-tion to another, this brave demand for political recognition was destined to. In that time school suffrage has been granted in twenty-threeStates and Territories, partial suffrage for public improvements in threeStates, municipal suffrage in one, and in four States full political was the first State to accord citzenship to her women, and she bearstestimony to its efficacy in the progress, honor, and sobriety of her people.
