The seal of York abbey (UK), once lost and rediscovered in the late 1800's. It went missing after the dissolution of the monasteries &shows the virgin mary and the Christ child on a covered throne, a moon, a star and two lions. Though now in ruins, the Benedictine abbey (standing in the York Museum Gardens) was once the wealthiest abbey in the north and one of the richest in the country. It superceded the church, monastery or monasterium of St. Olave on the same land. Alan Rufus granted the lands to Abbot Stephen and a group of monks from Whitby and the new abbey was refounded in 1088.
