It contemplates handling this ma-terial just as a railroad would, ordering directly fromthe material contractors such supplies as are neededfrom time to time, and installing it as the subway andelevated work now under way in New York progressessufficiently to permit of so doing. Again, in some instances, the city mightdesire to install a portion of the tracks for temporaryoperation, and it was appreciated that no contractorcould bid on doing work under such uncertain condi-tions. STANDARDIZATION AND MILEAGE In order to obtain a standard track constructionthroughout the dual system (comprising not only thecity-built lines, but also the lines now owned and beingbuilt by the operating companies, all of which the cityhas the right ultimately to take over) the commissioninvited the New York Municipal Railway Corporationand the Interborough Rapid Transit Company to conferwith its engineers. The result has been the adoption ofa set of standards and specifications which will apply toall new rapid transit lines whether built by the city orby the operating companies.
