In Sep-tember he captured the Nez Perces, under Chief Joseph,in Northern Montana, and in 1878 captured a band ofBannocks near the Yellowstone Park. After a difficultcampaign against the Apaches under Geronimo andNatchez, he compelled those chiefs to surrender on Sep-tember 4, 1886. He deemed it advisable, in the interest. of the future tranquillity of the Indians, to accept a con-ditional surrender from Geronimo, agreeing that neitherthe chief nor any of his lieutenants should suffer deathfor their part in the crimes. He received the thanks of the Legislatures of Kansas,Montano, New Mexico, and Arizona for services in cam-paigns against the Indians in the West, and the citizensof Arizona presented him a sword of honor at Tucsonon November 8, 18S7, in the presence of a large gather-ing of citizens of the Territory. General Miles was appointed a brigadier-general in theU. S. Army December 15, 1880, and was assigned to thecommand of the Department of the Columbia; from thishe was transferred to command the Department of theMissouri in July, 1S85. In April, 1886, he was orderedto command the Department of Arizona, and he remainedin that department until ordered to command the Divi-sion of the Pacific in 1888. He was appointed major-g
