View from top of Beckton Alps (waste tip from gas works clearance), looking roughly south across Beckton Retail Park.

After Beckton gas works, the largest in Europe, closed down, the site was bulldozed by the LDDC (London Docklands Development Corporation) and most of the dangerous waste piled up to form the Beckton Alps, capped with 2 metres of clay. Used for some years as a dry ski slope, it is currently in a dangerous state, although the owners have plans for a hotel development. At the base of the alp is Beckton Retail Park. Past that near the horizon are student residences for the University of East London, next to the Royal Docks. The hills are on the other side of the Thames, around Woolwich.
