Wikipedia: Castelo Mendo is a place and a former Portuguese municipality in the Almeida district . On June 30, 2011 the community had 87 inhabitants and an area of km². Castelo Mendo is one of the twelve historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas . he place has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Castelo Mendo received its first town charter ( Foral ) in 1229, from King Sancho II. It was a separate district (concelho) until 1855, and has since been part of the Almeida district. On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Castelo Mendo, Mesquitela , Monte Perobolço and Ade were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Castelo Mendo, Ade, Monteperobolso e Mesquitela . Castelo Mendo has been one of the twelve particularly protected and subsidized historic villages, the Aldeias Históricas , since 1998 . Its numerous architectural monuments include some Manueline mansions , various sacred buildings, fountains, stone crosses and public buildings. The castle complex from the 13th century, which has been a listed building since 1946, should be mentioned in particular. Something special about Castelo Mendo are its old mulberry trees . They stand individually in place. According to one story, a king once tried to plant mulberries, which silkworms would use as a natural source of food. However, the company failed; the mulberry trees grew anyway and are accessible to everyone. They are even made into a local alcoholic specialty.
