When a facet isfinished, the stone is reset in the handle and the process months are expended in cutting large stones, as the work pro-ceeds very slowly. The polishing is performed upon a rapidly revolving steel wheel, d,driven by a band, g, and fed by hand with diamond dust and oil. Thediamond is set in a dop as before, on the end of a weighted arm, /, e, andheld against the wheel, the results of the process being collected in abox for future operations. Diamonds with flaws or imperfections are sawed asunder or split, thelatter (shown at A) being a speedy but risky operation, requiring greatjudgment in determining the plane of cleavage and skill in the use of thechisel, h, and hammer. For sawing, a fine wire is used, fed, as in the caseof the revolving wheel, with diamond dust and oil. 830. Diamondsfor the use of the lapidary are crushed in a mortar, which consists of a cyHndrical box, a, and a pestle, Z>, both madeof hardened steel. A small rough diamond isplaced in the mortar, and the pestle drivendown by a hammer. The pieces of brokendiamond are examined for the detection offragments suitable for gravers, drills, and etch-ing points. The remainder is crushed to animpalpable powder by several hours continued work, rotating the pestle between blows. When sufficient fineness is not attained by the mortar, the dust may be ground between the concave and convex su
