Fossil clubmoss. Leaf-base scars on the trunk of a fossil clubmoss tree (Lepidodendron sp.). Giant clubmoss trees were common 345-270 million years ago before the flowering plants evolved. They grew very quickly to over 30 metres tall in the damp forests that dominated the landscape. Their slender trunks were covered with diamond-shaped scars left by the bases of fallen leaves. This sample is from West Scotland, UK. Magnification at 35mm size.
