Kea ( Nestor notabilis) is a large parrot endemic to the South Island of New Zealand, shown here at an elevation of 1100 meters at the top of the Mackinnon Pass in Fiordland National Park. This is the only species of alpine parrot in the world. It is noted for its high intelligence (about that of a 3 to 4 year old child)--a trait essential for survivial in harsh environments.
