This river has adrainage area of about 4,100 square miles of which 1,450 are inWisconsin. Aside from these there are numerous small streamswhose drainage area amounts to from 100 to 300 square miles. Of the streams draining to Lake Superior the most important isthe Ontonagon, which with its widely branching system drains1,250 square miles, and is the outlet for a large elevated basin lyingsouth of the Copper Range. Next in importance is the Tahquame-non, which drains 800 square miles in the eastern part of the Penin-sula into White Fish Bay. The third stream in size is the Sturg
