Theoretically these offerings should have beenrepeated year by year throughout the ages, but theEgyptians soon realised that this could not be. Aftertwo or three generations the dead of bygone timeswould be neglected in favour of others more when they were endowed with pious foundationswhose revenues were intended to provide offeringsand priests to serve them, the hour of oblivion wasonly deferred. Sooner or later the double would beforced to search for food among the town refuse andcorrupt filth lying about on the ground. The survivors therefore conceived the idea ofinscribing on the stela a list of the food anddrink he would require, with an invocation to thegods of
