Fire Hose.—A very convenient hose for use in shortlengths in buildings is underwrit-ers linen hose. It will withstandalmost any pressure likely to besubjected to and, being flexible,can be neatly coiled or folded intoa very small space. The size ofhose generally used for this pur-pose is 214 inches diameter. Forlengths of more than 25 feet, forreal fire fighting, a smooth rub-ber-lined hose is the best to use, and in no case should thehose be less than 2V^ inches in diameter, if it is 50 feet orlonger, for a smaller hose will have only about one-half the effective range. For instance,with 80 pounds pressure, 250 feetof 214-inch unlined linen hosewill have an effective height ofstream of 42 feet, while under the
