He attendedthe district school, but at the early age of thirteen was thrownupon his own resources and left home to make his way in theworld. He went to Natick and worked at the shoemakersbench, and while there formed the friendship of Henry Wilson,a fellow mechanic, who in later years was to record his name highin the annals of fame. This intimacy was terminated only uponthe death of the vice-president. Gradually improving his mindby study, he became a schoolmaster and taught in and aboutNatick, and was finally admitted to the bar in 1853. His legalwork was so careful and judicial that he was frequently appointedto determine facts for the court as auditor, and his findings weregenerally acceptable. He was Representative in 1859. Towardsthe end of his life he became very deaf, and was not often seenin public. He died in Medford May 4, 1893, aged seventy years,.
