At Durham the prison was under theInfirmarers house, and the prisoner in the custody of theInfirmarer. Here, though not actually under his house, itwas conveniently placed for his supervision. The outside of the south wall of the Privey Dorter base-ment is now entirely concealed by recent buildings ; but afew months ago, in making some alterations at the porch ofthe School-room,^ part of it was exposed, and in it was founda round-headed opening (43) two feet high, and the samebroad, and something over two feet above the level of Little *Deans Yard. It was rebated for a flap outside, and hadmarks of the fastening above and below. I did not see it,but from what I can learn, it appears to have been of earlydate. Its use must have been that of an ash-place or dust-hole for throwing refuse into the pit into which it opens. The Dorter and Chambers connected with The Dorter is now divided into the School-room and theChapter Library, and extended in length from the Revestryto the present entrance to Little Deans Yard from theDark Cloister, being something over 170 feet long. It hadaccess to the church by a stone gallery (120), still remainingacross the west end of the Revestry, and a wooden windingstair (121), which formerly stood in the corner of the SouthTransept, and is shown in Darts plan. The walled-updoorway to it remains behind the Argyle Monument. The ^ The school-room is the southern part of the old Dorter and the vestibule to itcrosses the site of the Privey Dorter. NOTES ON THE ABBKY BUILDINGS OF WKSTMINSTER. :>9 thirteenth century entrance to the Dorter from the Cloisterwas the same as that to the present Library (122). Andabout the same distance from the south end as this is fromthe north end is the opening in the vaulting of the base-ment (49), which I have suggested may mark the site of theorigin
