These reservoirs may also be used as man-holes and asventilatins: shafts. TunmrT^ TESTIS^. Fig. 3i!.—Flushing tank. (After Tarbotton.) Ventilation of seioers.—Sewer-ventilation is even more important thansewer-flushing, though neither the one nor the other can safely be dis-pensed with in any system of sewerage. Unfortunately the means ofcarrying into effect this most important sanitary measure have not yetbeen determined with entire satisfaction. Much, however, has been ac-complished in this direction. In order to prevent the concentration of sewer-air, relieve pressure, and reduce to a minimum the decomposition of organic substances con-tained in sewage, it is of the greatest importance that openings communi-cating with the sewers should be provided, to afford an outlet for the foulgases, and secure the free admission of atmospheric air. No system ofsewerage, however well designed, and however carefully the plans may becarried into effect, can be depended upon to fulfill its sanitary mission, unless there be combined with it a thorough system of ventilation.
