Number of William Wilberforce birthplace, Wilberforce House Museum, Kingston upon Hull, East Yorkshire, England, UK

Member of Parliament for Hull, William Wilberforce led the movement which resulted in the abolition of the British slave trade in 1807. His birthplace tells story of the man, the fight for freedom, and today’s ongoing battles for human rightst. This is the oldest anti-slavery museum in Britain, opened in 1906 and now in Hull’s award-winning Museums Quarter. Completely reworked with a visitor lift, interactive exhibits, hands-on learning and new West African culture and contemporary galleries, Wilberforce House itself is freshly painted to reflect its Georgian beauty. The period feel survives with white plasterwork and original oak-panelling encasing a series of rooms with stone flagged floors and oak floorboards. 144 books from his personal library, including his journal. Born in 1759. He championed more than 60 reforms, one of them being the RSPCA. Working alongside other abolitionists, Wilberforce saw the abolition bill passed in the House of Commons in 1807 but died before slavery was officially abolished in 1833. One of the darkest periods in British history. Between 1776 and 1807, it is estimated Britain alone trafficked more than one million people.
