View NNW of St Clement's Church, Rodel, South Harris, Western Isles, Scotland, UK, showing cruciform plan with a tower at the W end. A fine pre-Reformation church started around 1520 by the 8th Chief of the Macleods of Dunvegan & Harris Alexander Macleod aka Alasdair Crotach (Humpback) who died in 1547. Continuous nave & chancel with N & S transepts built on a sloping hilltop with the W tower on a rock at the upper end. Built as a burial place of the Macleod Clan, Alexander's arched monument containing a recumbent figure in plate armour is set into the S wall of the church. There is a second such monument in the S wall, a warrior in armour against the N wall & several carved tombstones in the N transept. Rodel poetess Mary Macleod (1615-1707) is said to be buried in the S transept. Other Macleods lie in the walled churchyard. Church dedicated to St Clement, probably Clement Bishop of Dunblane (d 1258), rather than Pope Clement (d c 100).
