Thisdoes not, however, detract from the truth underlying the authentictradition, but on the whole it is best to take this tradition in itsbroad outlines, as it existed previously, and not to seek when andwhy and how long the bodies of the Apostles were concealed inthis place by pressing a doubtful passage of St. Still more careful must we be in dealing with the apocryphalwritings which speak of the work of the Apostles at Rome.
