In this state let heat be appliedto the base A C ; then as the water be-comes converted into steam of slightlygreater force than the atmospheric pres-sure, the piston will rise till the wholewater is in a state of steam. It must beobserved, however, that the generationof this steam, which is of atmospheric35. 274 OF THE MOVING FORCES USED IN THE ARTS. elastic force, affords no available power, but is simply sufficientto balance the column of atmospheric air, and exclude it froma given height of the cylinder. By Condensation.—In the state of things just described, ifthe steam be suddenly condensed into water by the applicationof cold, it is obvious that the piston will be driven downwardwith a force equal to the weight of the atmosphere which pres-ses on the piston, and through a distance equal to that whichthe piston had been raised by the generation of steam. It fol-lows that the power of steam which is of atmospheric elasticforce, is, when speedily condensed, directly proportionateto the space which it occupies. If the temperature of thissteam be raised above 212 degrees^ it will occupy a largerspace, the increase being equal to the expansion of steam bythe given change of temperature. But a quantity of heatnearly equivalent to the increase of volume will be absorbed, and hence, says Mr
