By Condensation.—In the state of things just described, ifthe steam be suddenly condensed into water by the applicationof cold, it is obvious that the piston will be driven downwardwith a force equal to the weight of the atmosphere which pres-ses on the piston, and through a distance equal to that whichthe piston had been raised by the generation of steam. It fol-lows that the power of steam which is of atmospheric elasticforce, is, when speedily condensed, directly proportionateto the space which it occupies. If the temperature of thissteam be raised above 212 degrees^ it will occupy a largerspace, the increase being equal to the expansion of steam bythe given change of temperature.
