Miss Emma Murray as Cleopatra in costume as a debardeur (barge porter) in Charles Selby's burletta Antony and Cleopatra, 1843. She wears a white shirt, velvet pantaloons and holds castanets. The costume became a popular fancy dress staple. Handcoloured lithograph from Thomas Hailes Lacy's Female Costumes Historical, National and Dramatic in 200 Plates, London, 1865. Lacy (1809-1873) was a British actor, playwright, theatrical manager and publisher.
