MOWAT, JAMES: Fleet-Surgeon, (retd.); Major, ; son of George Mowat; bornNew Deer, 11 Novem-ber 1870 ; , 1891 ; Surgeon,, 1894; Staff-Sur-geon, 1902. After 20years service in theRoyal Navy, Mowatretired in May 1914,and took up privatepractice in Dovercourt,Essex. On 4 August 1914he was called up for active service, and appointed , Hermes. Whilst he was acting in thiscapacity the ship was torpedoed in the Straits ofDover, 31 October 1914, and Mowat receivedthe thanks of the Lords of the Admiralty forhis good work on that occasion. In November1914 he was appointed to Otway,. 11 IN MEMORIAM. but, owing to shock consequent on the torpedo-ing of the Hermes, he was invalided outof the Navy. When the Government issuedan appeal because of the shortage of Doctors,Mowat at once responded. He joined the EastAnglian Station, was gazetted Major,, 7 May 1915, and was ordered to theDardanelles. On his way to take his share informing a Hospital at Mudros he lost his life inthe sinking of the transport King Edward,which went down in the /Egean Sea, 13August 1915.
