Liver cancer. Light micrograph of a slice through a primitive (early) carcinoma in liver tissue. The most common form of primary (originating in that organ) liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The cells and their nuclei (darker-stained) are seen here. It is difficult to distinguish the cancer cells from normal liver cells. Surgery may be possible, but the prognosis is still poor. Most patients die within a year.
