Delporte constellations map, South Celestial Pole. Many of the constellations had been known and named since ancient times, but the precise boundaries between them varied from astronomer to astronomer, leading to inconsistencies. The official boundaries were fixed in 1930 by the Belgian astronomer Eugene Joseph Delporte (1882-1955). His work was done on behalf of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which had established the official list of constellations at its first General Assembly in 1922. Delporte's maps of the constellations were published in Delimitation Scientifique des Constellations (1930).
