Compact bone, polarised light micrograph. The longitudinally sectioned osteons show bony lamellae arranged in parallel to a Haversian duct, occupied by a small blood vessel. Between the bony lamellae are the somata of the osteocytes (small elongated dark structures). Joining the Haversian ducts of some osteons with others are the Volkmann ducts. At bottom are two osteons cut transversely.
