Plumage of the sexes SUMMER, OR WOOD DUCK. Anas sponsa.——Top of the head, crest,and about the eyes, different shades ofgreen, witli purple reflections ; crest andside of the head marked by two whitelines, one terminating behind the eye andtbe other extending to the bill ; a blackpatclj on each side of the neck; chin,back part of the cheek, and ring roundthe neck white; lower part of the neckand breast bright chestnut-brown, spottedwitb white; back, scapulars, wings andtail exhibiting a play of green, purple,blue, gray, and velvet black ; a hair-like,splendent, reddish purple tuft on eachside of the rump; belly whitish; flanksyellowish gray, beautifully waved withblack, the tips of the long feathers, andalso those on the shoulder, broadly barredwith white and black. On most of theplumage is a play of colors with metalliclustre ; bill higher than wide at the base,
