While the patient is gen-tly turned upon his left side (Fig. 35), with the precaution of not allow-ing any exertion on his part, the compress is so placed upon the bedthat the rolled part lies in close proximity to the left side of the patientand the lower edge of the left slit is under the left axilla. Now the. Application of Chest Compress. patient is quietly turned upon his back, so as to release the rolled-upportion. The latter is now unrolled, and both edges of the compressare brought forward upon the front of the chest and are thus made toenvelop the latter snugly. The flannel cover, which has been allowedto lie upon the bed during the application of the wet compress, is nowbrought forward so as to cover the latter. It is secured by two safetypins in front and one pin upon each shoulder (Fig. 36). The well-known oil-silk jacket may serve as a model for the shapeof this wet compress. It should be changed every half-hour, unlessthe patients temperature is below ° F.; every hour unless thetemperature is ° F., when it should be discontinued.
