Alexander Suvorov Statue in Tiraspol, Transnistria, Moldova. Aleksandr Suvorov is the founder of the city, and a major Russian military leader of the 18th century. The statue was erected in the central square in 1979 in commemoration of his 250th anniversary. Transnistria is a breakaway state located between Moldova and Ukraine. Unlike Moldova, following the dissolution of the USSR the de facto sovereign state of Pridnestrovia chose not to separate from the Russian Federation and this escalated into a military conflict with Moldova in March 1992. A ceasefire was concluded in July 1992 and Transnistria is now an unrecognized independent presidential republic with its own government, parliament, military, police, postal system, and currency.
