Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing an illustration of different fortification methods designed by Menno van Coehoorn. His first system was applied to numerous places in the Netherlands, notably Nijmegen, Breda and Bergen op Zoom. Mannheim in Germany was also fortified in this way, while the second system was applied to Belgrade and Temesvar in eastern Europe.
