Sunset at Oregon's hypersaline Lake Abert, a mecca for migratory shorebirds. Its future is at risk for many reasons.

Sunset at Lake Abert. Lake Abert has long been a mecca for migratory shorebirds. It is very likely that diminishng water levels, caused by climate change and upstream withdrawls, will cause the saline lake to dry up at some time in the near future. As water levels drop, the soils at the north end of the lake bed have developed an alkali crust.
