While the world was plan-ning how deep mining could be carried on, the minersof Nevada had solved it with air compressor drills,diamond augers and powerful hoisting Sutro, backed by European cajutal, started totunnel the mines at a depth of 1,000 foot, accordingto the best methods of mining known to them, theminers with their modern machinery beat him in thorace, getting below the range of the tunnel longbefore he made the connection. The first twenty years of his lifewere passed in his native Slate. lie received athorough education at Granville College, and studiedcivil engineering, a profession in which he has gaineda name throughout the Pacific Coast, ilis firstsituation as an engineer was with the Bellefontaineand Indiana Kailroad Company, where ho wasemployed two years. In 1833 he came to Californiaby the Nicaragua route, reaching San Francisco inthe month of January-, and settled in Downieviile,Sierra County,* where he followed his profession andwas elected County Surveyor of Sierra County. InMay, IStjO, Mr. James crossed the mountains toNevada, settling at Virginia Cit^-, making the Corn-stock his headijuarters, as a mining surveyor, until1878. Duringthis time he was chosen Chief Kngineerof the Virginia and Truckee Jlailroad, which roadwas built under his supervision in 187
