He led the Transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century. Among his best known essays are "Nature" and "Self-Reliance." He was a friend of Henry David Thoreau. His home was in Concord, Massachusetts. For two years he lived in a cabin in Concord by what is known today as Walden Pond.
