Empress Eugenie presented with bouquet by peasant girl. Eugenie de Montijo (1826-1920), Spanish-born wife of Napoleon III of France married the Emperor in 1853. Noted for her beauty, elegance and charm, her taste in fashion set trends that were followed by women throughout Europe. In 1870 when France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War brought about the end of the Empire, Eugenie and Napoleon took refuge in England, settling at Chislehurst in Kent.
