This illustration of a Hindu devotee on the banks of the Ganges River in India during a festival dates to 1855. The Devotee had kept his left arm elevated in the position represented until it had become stiff and the fingernails had grown six or eight inches in length. The muscles and sinews in the arm had lost all power of producing motion, and the flesh had become withered. In his right hand are prayer beads.
