Deinotherium elephant-like mammal, illustration. This extinct herbivorous proboscid mammal is related to elephants and lived in what is now Europe. It appeared in the Middle Miocene (around 16-12 million years ago) and continued until the Early Pleistocene (around million years ago). It is thought to have been larger than modern elephants.
