In this engraving by German painter, printmaker, and engraver Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) , a clergyman (most likely a friar) is whipping himself. This practice of whipping oneself was practiced in the Middle Ages and at the time of the Reformation by some Christian orders as a way of atoning for sins. It was also believed by some that the practice would help them understand the sufferings of Jesus Christ.
