This wood fragment is claimed to be from the cell in Morro Castle that held Navy officer Lt. Richmond P. Hobson. He and his crew were captured during the Spanish American War after the intentional sinking of the USS Merrimac in a failed attempt to obstruct the channel and block in Spanish ships at Santiago Harbor, Cuba during the night of June 2-3, 1898.
