Owens-Illinois' Glassworks at Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland
Owens-Illinois' Glassworks at Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland has been home to a glass works for over 200 years and the existing O-I factory is the oldest glassworks in Europe still operating on its original site. The glass cone at the Alloa site is the only example left in Scotland. O-I is the largest manufacturer of glass containers in the world, with a leading presence in Europe, North America, Asia Pacific and South America. Approximately one of every two glass containers made worldwide is manufactured by Owens-Illinois, its affiliates, or its licensees. Owens-Illinois, Inc has circa 30,000 employees worldwide in 22 countries and is one of the worlds leading manufacturers of rigid packaging products. The Company was also a worldwide manufacturer of plastics packaging until July 2007 when the entire plastics packaging business was sold to Rexam PLC, a UK listed packaging manufacturer. Until late 2006 O-I headquarters were located in Toledo, Ohio - known as the Glass City for its history of glass-related companies - then relocated to the Levis Commons complex in the suburb of Perrysburg, Ohio. The move to Perrysburg was seen as controversial because a former had claimed O-I would be "the last company to leave Toledo."
