THE Titmice, to which family thisspecies belongs, are all small birds,bearing a curious resemblance in all externalpoints of structure to the jay. Like themthey have a short, strong, straight, conicalbill, rounded nostrils at its base, covered bytufts of thick, forward directed bristlyfeathers. As in the jays, the wings haveten feathers on the first joint and areshorter than the tail. Their feet, too, aremuch like those of the jays, and, so far astheir looks go, there is little to distinguishthem from the group, except their our Titmice are under seven incheslong, while all our jays are much largerthan this. The Titmice are distributed over thewhole of North America; those found inthe East and North are without crests andfor the most part have the top of the headblack or sooty brown.
