As Logging was banned in Oparara Basin in the Northwest of New Zealand's South Island in 2002 this unspoiled natural environment with temperate beech and podocarpus rainforest was open for nature conservation and hikers. Clear mountain rivers colored red by tannins are running in this area where the rare blue duck survived. 2002 wurde der Holzeinschlag im Oparara-Tal im Nordwesten der Südinsel Neuseelands verboten. Seither sind die Südbuchen und Podocarpus-Wälder in diesem Teil des Kahurangi-Nationalparks geschützt. Nur eine schmale, kurvenreiche Schotterstraße führt in das Tal, in dem mehrere Wanderwege einen fantastischen Regenwald und faszinierende Kalksteinhöhlen erschließen. In den klaren, von Tanninen rotgefärbten Gebirgsflüssen der Region hat die vom Aussterben bedrohte Saumschnabelente überlebt.
