The association has five standing committees, as fol-lows: (1) Rail corrugation, (2) standardization, (3)rails for curves, (4) anti-friction bearings, (5) wearof steel tires. At the Nuremberg meeting reports werereceived from each of these committees. The committee on rail corrugation presented twopapers, one by Professor Oberhofer of Breslau, describ-ing tests which had been conducted with high and lowcarbon steel, the other by Chief Engineer Wochert ofMannheim, who discussed the possibility of oscillatingfriction being a cause of corrugation. The committeeon rails recommended among other standards two typesof rails for curves, one a guard rail of normal section. GUARD RAIL WITH RENEWABLE LIP FOR SHORTRADIUS CURVES for curves of 50 meters (165 ft.) radius and over, and arenewable lip rail for curves of smaller radius. Asection of the latter for a 180 mm. (7 in.) rail isshown, the dimensions being given in inches. Therenewable lip is made of manganese steel. Tests arebeing conducted by Committee No. 4 on all types ofanti-friction bearings and by Committee No. 5 to deter-mine the proper carbon content for tires under differentconditions. The president of the association during the past yearhas been Director Wussow of the Grosse Berliner Strass-bahn, and F. Helm has been secretary. In its annual report for 1920, the Ontario SafetyLeague, which has its headquarters in Toronto, listsa large number of items of safety work which havebeen conducted along lines somewhat similar to thosefollowed by the National Safety Council.
