Cigrand. FIE histon, of Chicagos seal has l^een one of mysten- and earliest record has been traced back to 1833, when the presentcitv was still a town. The design of the towns seal was a ]>rimi-tive yet faithful copy of the obverse side of the half-eagle gold coin of theUnited States money. Col. T. J. V. Owen, United States commissionerto negotiate with the neighboring Indian tribes, and president of thetown board, has been credited with being the author of this, the firstauthentic signature of the towns existence. Upon the incorporation of Chicago as a city in 1837, among the firstquestions to come before the common council was that of a municipalseal, some of the city fathers seemingly favoring the retention of the oldtown seal, while others, among whom were Mayor Ogden and AldermanGoodhue, argued in
