This mountainoustownship lies on the W. side ofConnecticut rivei-: it is watered by a pleasant pond and by Paulsstream. It has some good land, butmost of it is poor. First settled,1770. Population, 1S30, 236. Itlies 54 miles N. E. from Montpelier,and 8 N. from Guildhall. MAINE. This State was originally granted by James I. to the Plymoufh Compa-ny, in 1606, by whom it was transferred to Mason and Gorges in 1624This grant comprised all the territory between Merrimack river and Sa-gadahock. The territory was afterwards purchased by Massachusetts ford£l,250, who obtained a confirmalioa of the charter in 1691, with the ad-dition of the residue of Maine and Kova Scotia, including what is nowcalled the Province of New Brunswick. This state, formerly the District of Maine, became independent ofMassachusetts in 1S20. By the Constitution, the legislative power 13vested in a Senate and House of Representatives, elected annually bythe people, on the second Monday in September.
