Here at Bemis the railroad occupies nearly the samelevel as the Saco, whose clear racing waters appear from time to time now hidden amid giant boulders and again running smoothly over a broad,pebbled bed. The Saco is one of the most distinctive of White Mountain streams having its source in the lake which fronts the Crawford Houseand racing down through the Crawford Notch, receiving in its passage the waters of many mountain streams which leap and flow in cascade?down theprecipitous sides of the gorge.
