Viscount Brouncker. Portrait of Viscount William Brouncker, Irish mathematician and 2nd Viscount Brouncker of Castle Lyons (1620-84). He was a founding member of the Royal Society and its first President, and as a friend of Samuel Pepys was mentioned in his Diary. Brouncker expressed 'pi' as a continued fraction. With John Wallis, he solved Fermat's questions about Pell's equation, giving a general method for their solution.
