A plate depicting the Trial of Charles I in January 1649, from John Nalson's "Record of the Trial of Charles I" 1684. Charles I (1600-1649), King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 27th March 1625 until his execution in 1649. Charles's last years were marked by the English Civil War which led to his eventual death. He is often referred to as King Charles the Martyr.
